Practice Determinants and Outcomes of Multiple Performance Measures Essay
Practice Determinants and Outcomes of Multiple Performance Measures - Essay Example Business performance measurement systems play an important role in developing strategic plans, monitoring and evaluating the achievement of organizational strategic goals and compensating managers. In todayââ¬â¢s dynamic business environment with extreme competition, there has been considerable discussion on the importance of performance measurement innovations (Kaplan & Norton, 1996, Atkinson et al., 1997, Ittner & Larcker, 1998a). New financial metrics such as Economic Value Added (EVAà ®) and Shareholder Value Approach (SVA) have been introduced and used by some organizations. Non-financial measures have been recommended to complement the financial measures and organizations are being advised to erect multi-dimensional measurement systems. Multiple performance measurements and integration of financial and non-financial measures are some of the key innovations in management control systems that will provide managers critical information on monitoring key business activities and organizational goals. As no comprehensive corporate performance measurement study has been conducted in Hong Kong and Shanghai, the first objective of this study is to explore the current practices of multiple performance measures by both Hong Kong and Shanghai organizations and compare any differences between them. As Hong Kong is one of the international cities long influenced by modern western managerial practices, it is preferable to study the performance measurement practices in Hong Kong.

What factors are important to UEL undergraduates to help them to learn Essay
What factors are important to UEL undergraduates to help them to learn effectively on their courses - Essay Example These different conceptions can be held by different persons or by the same person in different circumstances. The list begins with consuming information. Therefore, the overall meaning of learning includes procuring meaning, interpreting the events, understanding and constructing knowledge. Learning also implies changing a person but that is a gradual process and takes significant amount of time. Learning effectively from their courses is an important aspect for the learners. The learning of today will better frame their future and transform them into better individuals (Carnell andà Lodge, 2002; Hewitt, 2008; Billett and Henderson, 2011; Hativa, 2001). This report focuses on the important factors which lead to effective learning among the learners. This study is important from the perspective of both the learners and the university. The findings of the research will help the student to understand the factors that help them to learn better along with the university, who will deriv e special benefits from this report. Knowing the factors that are responsible for effective learning among the students, the university can frame their programs better by considering these aspects. This will not only enhance the learning process of the students, but will also make the job of the mentors easier. Research Methodology Two well-known ways of descriptive methods are qualitative and quantitative analysis, which analyses the research problem in an effective manner. Both the research methods are significant and similar to each other, but are quite different from each other. The research scholars have argued on the fact that the gap left by one of the research method is filled by the other one. In this case, for identification of the factors, both qualitative and quantitative analysis will be used. This is because of the reason that quantitative analysis will help in quantifying the data, which in turn will help in identifying the factors, but the qualitative analysis will h elp in recognizing the reasons for considering these factors with such importance. Quantitative research is based on numbers. For instance, in this research, the number of students considering class environment as an important factor is questioned. On the other hand, the qualitative research has originated from social sciences and the interpretation lies in reading from the people in real world. The factors that are left unidentified by the quantitative research are identified by the qualitative research. In order to conduct the analysis, the data required will be collected through a questionnaire survey and interviews that will be conducted on the students of University of East London (UEL). In order to identify the factors that lead to effective learning, students are the best persons who can help in identifying the factors; because of this reason, the students are chosen as the sample on which the study will be conducted. Among the other methods of conducting the study like, expe riments, case study, action research and archival research, survey is the best method for this study as it requires analysing the current data collected from the university students. Moreover, the study does not involve any secondary data other than current data, which is also collected from the university students (Grinnell and Unrau, 2008; Collis and Hussey, 2009). A well-structured questionnaire comprising of close-ended questions, and interview questions comprising of open-ended questions will be used for conducting the survey on the students. The answers to the questionnaires will be analysed in quantitative manner, whereas the interview questio

Diverse Families Essay Example for Free
Diverse Families Essay The modern society is marked with many challenges, which are transforming the traditional social way of life. For instance, the traditional two parent family seems to be losing the originality and substance which was associated with it in the past. This is evidenced by the increasingly high rate of divorce which has resulted to high number of single parented and remarried families. Clearly the challenge in this matter is encountered in appreciating that a two parent family is full of challenges which when left unattended can result into far reaching effects. Many people therefore find solution to these challenges in single parent and remarried families. This fact is underscored by sociologist Paul Bohannan who defines divorcees as people who have failed in their marriage but would also do not like to settle in a bad marriage (Gladding, 2002). This paper is written with an interest of discussing how single and remarried families differ from traditional Two-parent families as well as discussing their challenges and strength. How Single parent and Remarried families are treated differently from traditional two parent families. Single parent and remarried families are treated as failures of their original two parent family in the modern society. This is because the society still holds the sanctity and originality of a two parent family at esteem and as a command from their supreme being (Gladding, 2002). They therefore believe that any deviation from this command is a betrayal of their religionââ¬â¢s requirement and has a well defined punishment documented in their holy doctrines. Further to this, many religions hold that all men and women must marry and stay in their marriages irrespective of the challenges they meet. Single parent and remarried families are therefore depicted as non official and against the requirements of the Supreme Being (Harris, Abernethy, Smenta, 2000). Still to be noted here is the perception that single parents and remarried parents are sexually immoral. In the modern society, sexual immorality is still perceived to be more pronounced and associated with women than men. This compounded by the fact the number of unmarried single parents are women. To avoid being branded a feminist, I find it necessary to mention here that the considerable number of unmarried single parented men in the society cannot be ignored in this discussion. This perception is overstressed by the fact that human beings reproduce through sexuality which is believed by many members of our society to be legitimate only when it occurs during marriage and with only one partner in life time (Harris, Abernethy, Smenta, 2000). Based on this discussion, it is apparent that having children outside the wed lock or divorcing as well as remarrying another partner and having other children is treated as a form of sexual immorality which in the broad and normal sense of the word is not acceptable in the society. Strengths and special challenges associated with culturally diverse families Single parent families face a number of challenges in the society. Top on the list of these challenges is financial problems. Available statistical research results shows that single parent families have financial problems, which are more severe than in the case of two parent families (Gladding, 2002). As a matter of fact, the financial contribution of one parent cannot be compared to the contribution of two parents. This fact becomes worse if the family was rendered single parented by divorce. This is because the family might have been used to a given standard of living which changes all of a sudden due to lack of financial support from the other partner. As a result, a period of stress and depression follows before the divorced person adapts to the new ways of living. This challenge becomes more serious if the parent undergoing this traumatizing experience has the custody of the children. Remarried families have for long faced the challenge of neglect. This is evidenced in cases where one of the parents had children. It therefore follows that each of the parents has to appreciate each other as well as loving the children. It is believed that the biggest gift an individual can give to his or her partner is by loving the kids (Harris, Abernethy, Smenta, 2000). This undoubtedly shows that you where not only looking for a spouse but you were willing to join a family. However, available studies shows that in many a time, people find it hard to love kids whom they have not fathered or mothered. The desire to have a spouse can overcome the importance of loving the kinds and hence it can amount into another form of conflict of interest (Gladding, 2002). This problem is compounded by the possibility of getting in the present marriage what was lacking in the previous marriage or life. The effect of neglect is also evidenced in cases where the grand parents or either of the parents fails to recognize the step children and therefore they deny them their right of inheritance. One of the major strengths associated with the single parent and the remarried families is that they are put in a position to enjoy there life as well as to enhance the goodness of their children (Gladding, 2002). Some family relationships are marked with many challenges which can have negative far reaching effects and therefore detaching from a non satisfying marriage gives an individual an opportunity to restructure his or her life as well as the life of the children. Although it is argued that divorcees are marriage fails. It is also important to appreciate that they are people who are not willing to stick into a bad marriage. In conclusion therefore, single parent and remarried people are perceived negatively in the society as compared to the two parent family but this kind of family can be a solution to other problems which otherwise could be more hurting to the parent and the kinds at large. Issues Related To Migration
Issues Related To Migration Migration influences the social, political, economic life of the people of a country which has higher immigrants. In India, migration either domestic or international, has a major effect on countrys economy. International migration has become an important feature in globalized markets influencing the economic growth. The impact of the migration is complex for both the immigrants and the countries involved. This paper includes the push and pull factors that can lead to migration of people. It also includes the social and economic impacts of migration on different communities in a country. Also, it includes various reasons that leads to domestic and international migration of people. There has been concern about international migration in different services for some years now, but recently the situation has become more acute for a number of reasons, mostly reflected in severe staff and skill shortages in the different systems of many countries. While industrialized countries, in addressing the problem of staff shortages, become recipient countries and actively recruit migrants abroad, the emigration of qualified workers in a number of donor countries may undermine the functioning of their activities. INTRODUCTION:- Migration basically means the movement of people from one place to another. Migration is generally categorized as internal known as immigration or it can be external emigration. Voluntary migration is when people choose to move for a new job or a better education and forced migration is when they feel they have no choice but to move because their life is threatened or in danger or it may be due to famine, war or persecution. There have been various issues that are linked to migration that have come to limelight through series of workshops, conferences, panels, film screenings, cultural and artistic activities like human right aspects, living conditions, migrant workers rights, human trafficking, etc. All these issues have a great impact on migrant people as well as the locals. Rachel Sabates-Wheeler and Ian MacAuslan- the two socialists, argue that it is in the interests of migrants and both host and source country governments to investigate and fully understand the implications of l egal, physical and political access structures to social protection. ISSUES RELATED TO MIGRATION:- Policy debates about immigration generally focus on two broad themes: the impact of immigration upon the economy, and its soaial and cultural impact. The immigrants are seen taking the various resources, making it more difficult to unite the societies and undermining a sense of national identity. So, there is a need for these policy makers or the governing bodies to balance the economic need for migrants against the social problems they create. 1) Human Rights vs Migrants Rights:- It is imperative to focus on the respect of human rights and right of access to justice. Migrants rights are also as important as human rights. There should be a legislation that should refer to the economic, social and cultural contribution of migrants and Diaspora. 2) Trafficking of Persons mainly Children:- There have been many problems like difficult living conditions of minor migrant children between 9 and 18 years of age. In search of jobs in order to support their families, they often fall into the trap of adults who bring them in other countries and exploiting them mentally and sexually. There is an African Organization that is working with various organizations in ECOWAS region that aims at helping these children. 3) Forced Migration due to Physical Factors:- Climatic changes, temperature, lack of water supply, droughts, floods, etc. are also a major reason for emigration. So, there is a need for respective countries to revisit this phenomenon. The emigration of these people often exposes them to the risks of being trafficked, slavery or prostitution of women. 4) Migration to Access Descent Living Conditions:- Migration from rural areas to urban cities that can provide better living opportunities. There are many problems that are encountered like unemployment, hunger, disease and economic conditions that prevails in the rural areas. For this government has to take up some steps to help the people facing these hardships. 5) Diaspora to Local Development:- It can play a number of important roles in helping development of the home company. The primary route is no doubt by remitting to the home country. In addition, however, technology transfer and encouragement to trade and capital flows can be important in some settings, with highly skilled migrants playing a more visible role. ECONOMIC IMPACTS OF MIGRATION:- The effects of migration on sending countries depend critically on the magnitudes, composition and nature of the migration streams, as well as upon the specific context from which migrants are drawn. The departure of migrants involves a decline in the supply of labour and usually implies a fall in output unless there is a large pool of unemployed or underutilized labour. In the case of skilled emigration, productivity declines as well. Because of the departure of labour, changes in the composition of output are likely to occur depending on the sectoral employment of emigrants. Moreover, intra-household inequality may increase and family roles may also change as a result. As emigration continues and more people leave the country, output continues to fall. On the other hand, however, continuing migration improves the information flow and thus reduces the information and transaction costs related to migration. This reduced cost of migration encourages family members to accompany initial migrants; households start using migration as a livelihood strategy. Furthermore, the possibility of migration might also encourage those left behind to start investing in skills required to leave the country and seek improved prospects abroad. At this stage, the home countrys economy starts adjusting to migration. This may take the form of increased labour force participation by certain groups of the There are certain key aspects in relation to this:- Unskilled Labour Supply Flows:- Situations in which labour markets in the country of origin are tight, so that unemployment spells are brief and infrequent and underemployment rare. In such context, emigration of workers requires employers to raise wage offers to fill the resultant vacancies. The other one is in which the migrant workers are replaced at little or no wages to the employers where surplus labour exists. Costs imposed on employers are minimal and overall output is hardly be affected. Much of the emigration of low skilled labour occurs from poorly performing economies. Surplus labour conditions can be expected to prevail in among high emigration countries. Brain Drain:- The process of brain drain is considered as one of the negative impacts of international migration. The trained officials like engineers, doctors, scientists and others who are the future of their country, contribute to innovation, technological advancement and development of a country, migrate to other countries for jobs and other facilities. They cause a negative impact from the perspective of home countrys development. SOCIAL EFFECTS OF MIGRATION:- Although the economic effects of migration have been extensively studied, the social effects have received less attention. However, they are very important and often closely linked with the much more studied economic effects of migration. Migration may impact on social life in several ways and the impact will be different for different types of migration. The social effects of migration consist of changes in family composition, in gender roles, child outcomes in terms of labour, health and education, cultural effects and issues related to crime. Moreover migration may cause a shift in adolescents orientation, in the sense that children may consider migration as their ultimate goal and decide to pursue further education in order to increase their migration prospects. Apart from education, migration may impact on childrens health. Migration may have an important impact on migrants household lives in terms of family roles and gender roles within the family. In particular the selection of migrants within the household (whether it is the father, the mother or older children who migrate) will have an impact on the family members who stay behind and their roles within the household after migration has started. Most importantly the role of women in the household and subsequently in the society may change. The women whose husbands migrate, the outcome of migration depend on existing cultural practices and the flexibility of gender roles and family organization. Further the people who leave their birth place and flee to other countries are deprived of their cultures, languages, traditions, and other social activities that are also considered as a part of ones identity. As of now-a-days we are seeing in India, there have been many threats to the migrants from Assam who have settled in Bangalore are facing threats due to impending attack related to the communal violence in home state due to which students and workers flee back. The violence has spilled over to other states where Bodos and other ethnic tribal members from the impoverished north-east have migrated in search of jobs. Violence has also been reported in Hyderabad, western cities of Pune and Nashik affecting the migrants. MIGRATION IN DIFFERENT COUNTRIES:- India as a nation has seen high migration rate in recent years. In 90s around 98 million people migrated from one place to another. Apart from women, migrating due to marriage, employment is the biggest factor for migration. The number of job seekers have increased by 45% over the previous decade. Nearly 14 million people migrated in search for jobs out of which 12 million was men. Migrants have created pressure on others who are in same job market. Most people migrate because of a combination of push and pull factors. Lack of rural employment, fragmentation of land holdings and declining public investment in agriculture create a crisis for rural Indians. Urban areas and some rural areas with industrial development or high agricultural production offer better prospects for jobs or self-employment. No of Migrants (in million) 1951-61 66 1961-71 68.2 1971-81 81 1981-91 80.9 1991-2001 98.3 The onset of mass immigration from India, Pakistan and the Caribbean in the late 1940s and the 1950s coincided with the dismantling of the British Empire, and the decline of Britains global status. Immigration became the focus for the debate about these broader shifts. The perception that immigrants were alien to the British way of life ensured that the relationship between immigrants and the British state was defined largely by hostility, racism and confrontation. Not only was immigration policy driven by the desire specifically to keep out non-whites, but the state also viewed non-white immigrants settled in Britain as undesirables. Immigrants were the problem, and that problem had to be policed. This led both to discrimination against blacks and Asians in every sphere of social life, including housing, education and employment, and to confrontations with the police, confrontations that came to an explosive climax in a series of major riots in Britains inner cities in the late 1970 s and the early 1980s. Nearly eight million immigrants entered the United States from 2000 to 2005, more than in any other five-year period in the nations history, 3.7 million of them entered illegally. Since 1986 Congress has passed seven amnesties for illegal immigrants. In 1986 president Ronald Reagan signed immigration reform that gave amnesty to 3 million illegal immigrants in the country. Hispanic immigrants were among the first victims of the late-2000s recession, but since the recessions end in June 2009, immigrants posted a net gain of 656,000 jobs. Over 1 million immigrants were granted legal residence in 2011.

Human equality does not trump that of Nature Essay -- Persuasive, W
My argument that I will make will be that the speaker arrives at the conclusion that he, as well as the human race, is equal to nature. Through the use of a series of examples, I will make my point that both the human race and nature are considered to be equal in array of aspects that are debatable. Through a series of questioning from the child that is reflected back to the child by the speaker, the speaker attempts to take a crack at the meaning of natureââ¬â¢s evidence. E.g. in section 6 the child poses a question which seems to be directed at the speaker, " what is this grass?" Fetching it to me with full hands; How could I answer the child? I do not know what it is any more than he."(99-100) The tone the speaker held was once jubilant and self-praising that ousted the need for criticism of natures grass or itââ¬â¢s flags, and stated " I celebrated myself, and sing myself, ââ¬Å"(1) He does not question and analyze the world as it evolves and blossoms around him until he m oves from his loafing phase. Instead the speaker insists upon observing the motions of nature for example " I loafe and invite my soul, I lean and loafe at my ease observing a spear of summer grass."(4-5) This simple observation is not matched with any sort of debate from the speaker. Instead the speaker leans and loafs and does nothing but enjoy himself in the whims of the summer grass. In the speakerââ¬â¢s effortless state, I would claim that he is similar to a child who coddles in the act of doing nothing. This glorification of the speaker goes out on a whim and outstretches to welcome a deserving partner to join in the loafing as specified in section 5 " Loafe with me on the grass, loose the stop from your throat, not words not music or rhyme I want, not custom or lecture... ... life. The life of a human is then set to change regardless of natureââ¬â¢s input or any other humanââ¬â¢s inputs for that matter because every human life holds different meanings and routines. Whitman drives my point home in saying ââ¬Å"And to die is different from what anyone supposed and luckierâ⬠. (130) Whitman seems to be implying here that no one can predict the way one person will die and in that sense we are lucky to live a life that is left unobserved on a constant basis and to be at peace is a true gift to be cherished, which goes hand in hand with our death. In the end I would say the speaker has come to recognize nature as having some amount of power, but an equalitarian outlook on life seems to be a viewpoint that Whitman peers through by posing a series of questions that are open-ended and aimed at checking and balancing the power of both humans and nature. Reality: Influenced by an Individualââ¬â¢s Perception and Interpretation E
Reality: Influenced by an Individualââ¬â¢s Perception and Interpretation When the term reality is mentioned, many questions arise regarding what reality is and what is real originate also. Unfortunately, many of these questions are yet to be answered since determining reality and what is real are left to each individualââ¬â¢s imagination - for one to determine reality as he or she sees fit. A dictionary may provide a definition for the word reality, but things that constitute reality may never be entirely defined because it is one of those things that is almost completely based on an individualââ¬â¢s perception and interpretation. A dictionary may also provide a definition for the word perception and the word interpretation, but many individuals perceive and interpret many things very differently. With the vast variation of people, thoughts, and beliefs in our world, how should society determine the boundaries of reality? On the other hand, is it even possible to set specific limits when considering reality? The movie chosen, as a springboard into the forthcoming philosophical discussion, was ââ¬Å"Dark Cityâ⬠, A Mystery Clock Production by New Line Cinema directed by Alex Proyas. The movie raised many interesting questions and produced many engaging comments. At the very beginning of the movie, you hear the voice of Dr. Schreber, played by Kieffer Sutherland. He begins by saying, ââ¬Å"They [the ââ¬Å"Strangersâ⬠] had mastered the ultimate technology, the ability to alter physical reality by will alone.â⬠i[1] If the ââ¬Å"Strangersâ⬠are altering reality, the people of the city will never truly know what is real and what is artificial. Consequently, the city in which they live is all artificial and made up. We as viewers can see this, but ... ...ed and are likely to continue to remain unanswered for many years to come. It is highly doubtful the term reality will ever be entirely and unrestrictedly measurable. Notes: i[1] Dr. Daniel P. Malware Company is one of the biggest companies in the industry where it has established its brand and logo in the market. This company is the biggest rival of the Dyad Company. Threat of substitute à à à à à à à à à à à The competition situation in the market based on substituteââ¬â¢s threat is not a competition threat to the Dyad Company. They supply to companies that they are well aware of. Dyad Company has new products which require different suppliers and thus it will be hard to establish new suppliers. Threats of new entry à à à à à à à à à à à There a lot of new companies that are joining the industry, these companies are offering their products at a cheaper price and thus they attract more customers especially the ones who do not believe in product or company loyalty.
